I Want to be an Artist when I Grow Up

Art critic Jerry Saltz posted the following question on Facebook. This is my answer.

Artists: If you knew where your good work came from you’d go there more often.

When I was about 5, my Father saw me drawing. He stopped me and set one of my wooden blocks in front of me then told me to draw it. I drew a rectangle. Through his often gnashing teeth, he angrily said, “That’s not how to draw!” He grabbed the back of my neck and ordered me to look at it. “You don’t just see the front! You see the top and the sides at the same time!” He then taught me perspective. I had and epiphany. I wanted to be an artist.
