Breakfast Lunch underpainting
Moving along.
Coffee shops, diners, greasy spoons — the city was once full of them. Each one was the kitchen and dining room for its corner of the neighboorhood. Though they are slowly disappearing, you can still find them. Many have a very loyal customer base and some even have acheived a sort of cult following.
Until recently there was one such place near me. Except for wear and tear, it remained the same for over 40 years. Unfortunately, the owner of the building wanted to replace it with an organic food restaurant. I guess a hash joint was considered a blight on the block.
The faux-Mediterranian style facade on the new place looks entirely out of place and silly. I don't know what kind of improvement the food will be, but visually, the restaurant is not an improvement over what it replaced — a mid-century coffee shop with a big neon sign.
The old place was well-loved as indicated by the graffiti that appeared on the door after it closed.
